From an intimate piano prelude arises the Bacharach ballad "Alfie", which touches us immediately because it conjures up how it could be, but is not. This dream, this vision, this intense belief in some nameless greater thing, addressed into a mute environment to a beloved absent person, ultimately disintegrates into a vision-absorbing reality in which perpetuating memories must be parceled out and one's own abandonment and loneliness can only be assuaged by music.
